Re: New Blog Post: Please excuse our dust.

Was thinking about asking how backgrounds were going a while back. It's the type of job that doesn't always get enough credit, backgrounds seem boring compared to characters but they're a major part of the visual design, the visual design is a major influence on the feel of the entire game, and ther...

Re: Mentaru Shoujo Concept Art Thread

Mm. I'd rather an honest portrayal of the mentally disabled than a sterilized 'tasteful' portrayal. Not everyone in the mentally disabled community are overly concerned about political correctness and sensitivity, especially when dealing with conditions that affect empathy, and not everyone talking ...

Been waiting for it. Just yesterday I was wondering when the new board would come, now that they have a new name, only for the temp board to suddenly close.

Re: Look at the KS TVTropes Page

To be fair, it really requires exposure to learn a language. Even experience with a second language can help you understand the differences and learn a third. Much of the world hears English through international culture, and you'll see and hear a bit from neighbouring countries too. If you're in a ...

Re: Look at the KS TVTropes Page

Nobody expects everybody to master a language, but we'd settle for decently formed sentences and an understanding of why language skills are important to communication. Oh, and knowing why "I could care less" makes no sense. Seeing Americans try to justify that makes me die a little inside.

Re: Look at the KS TVTropes Page

I confess that I might sometimes type the wrong their/there if I'm in a hurry and not thinking, but it's rare to not catch it and I try not to type without thinking anyway. Incorrect use of "they're" though? That's just stupid. Then again, all poor language from native English speakers seems to be j...

Re: New Game Name!! :D

I'm surprised by how negative the Japanese response to KS was. I expected them to be clever enough to tell that the shock-factor of the title was meant as an allegorical argument against the stigmatization of the physically impaired (or, that's what it appeared to be in my opinion). They didn't mea...

Re: New Game Name!! :D

We do have our reasons. I can only give you my personal reasons for trashing the working title mentaru shoujo though. This is what I said about the name Mentaru Shoujo on the dev boards when I opened the discussion about the name change a month or two ago: 1. It's too Japanese. There is nothing wro...

Re: New Game Name!! :D

What's the meaning/reason behind the name? :D Very early one, some devs voiced their concerns about the name 'Mentaru Shoujo', many of them didn't like the title. Mentaru Shoujo was just a working title proposed by Somnova's founder. This new name has been decided on by the dev team as a whole. Any...

Re: You have something good here, don't ruin it.

I'm pretty sure that preview didn't include Twilight just because they wanted everyone to know she liked Twilight, it included that series of movies to tell us something about her personality in a more creative way than just a straightforward description. C'mon, no reason to focus on it.

I think there's a BBCode for it too, part of the reason why BBCode shouldn't exist.

Re: IRL Mental Disorders/Problems That YOU Have

I feel like I spend way too much time discussing my own issues here. I normally avoid them and am less serious and more casual, but I have a rather limited capacity for social activity and it's mostly taken up elsewhere, so you lot just get the boring leftovers. This also means I'm even less likely ...

Re: Rin Tezuka set the bar high for this game

I have no problems with diagnosing people with autism, asperger's or whatever mental disorder, these things are real. I just don't believe in gradations. I don't think considering conditions as well as individual factors isn't extreme at all. Diagnosing someone with a certain disorder and start app...

Re: Rin Tezuka set the bar high for this game

Some people are like that, but there are still plenty of people in the support services who honestly do treat people a individuals (that might be because there's no simple drug to give us), going to the other extreme just isn't a perfect solution either. It works for people actually in the system an...

Re: Rin Tezuka set the bar high for this game

Is it really possible to have mild asperger's? I always thought it was something you either have or have not and it can't be measured 'how much' asperger's one has. Or at least, that's what I was always told. I wouldn't really say that there are different grades as such, so one person could have 25...

Re: Why Mentaru Shoujo?

Being diagnosed with Aspergers left me interested in how people cope with different (and more severe) conditions, so I'm hoping to learn something from both the game and the discussion it's already kicking up. That's really just a bonus though, KS wasn't a great VN on the subject of physical disabil...

Re: Isolda Gaillard

Eh, I'm not assuming anything quite yet. Those characteristics could just as easily fit someone without any mental disorder. It wouldn't surprise me if she did turn out to have aspergers/autism, but I wouldn't really want to be able to draw a definite conclusion from a short preview.

Re: Consent issues?

How different it is depends on the disability. I do have faith in you guys though, if only because if you can't be serious about the story then the project would probably fall apart before completion anyway. Can't really assume you're doing things wrong until we have more information (the devs were ...

Re: Consent issues?

I disagree. I actually thinks society emphasises love and sexuality too much. Nowadays we have 16-year old teens worrying their life is a failure and they will be hated and ridiculed by pretty much everyone for not having had any sex yet. Sexuality and lovey-dovey stuff is everywhere in the media, ...

Re: Consent issues?

We're taking great effort to make sure that all the characters are capable of full consent and that no exploitation whatsoever will take place. I've seen this point a lot of times already, and seeing how I suffer from a number of disorders myself, I feel the notion that I shouldn't be allowed to ex...
