The basic premise is that a large scale nuclear war (redundancies) breaks out, leaving nearly all of the human race extinct. Those that remain live in a massive bunker built into the side of Mt. Ranier. Two classes exist; the first is an intellectual vanguard entrusted with keeping the knowledge of civilization alive, the other is made up of descendents of lower-average intelligence commoners, persistently treated with drugs to their memories of the outside world and prior life to cease existing.
The reason for this is that the vanguard believe that the remnants of man will inevitably kill each other off if they realize to what extent their brethren have been sacrificed to the gods of nuclear vapor.
The conflict will come from the fact that it's been long enough that a nuclear winter will likely have ceased by the beginning of the story, and some of the upper class begin hankering to return to the outside world. There are multiple problems with this, among them that they don't know for certain if it IS safe at this point, and also that if the drones realize what has been done to them then they may well kill the vanguards. The protagonist would likely be a somewhat nihilistic vanguard who is of the opinion that, even if it isn't safe to exit yet, they should anyway because of just how mundane and humiliated a state the species will otherwise be forced to.
Thoughts? Is it that bad of an idea?
