What are your favorite western comics?

Since someone's already bothered to create the equivalent of this topic but for manga, I felt that it would be nice to get some symmetry up in here. I'll start with mine, in no particular order.

Johnny the Homicidal Maniac (Fillerbunny was also a pretty good series, especially issue #3)

I don't read all that many, or all that often, but Calvin & Hobbes, Garfield Minus Garfield, and Northlanders and some I like that I can name off the top of my head.

If this includes webcomics Oglaf, Penny Arcade, and Three Panel Soul are some I can also name (though I haven't read TPS in a long while).

Calvin and Hobbes, Dilbert, and Watchmen are all really great. As far as webcomics go, I like XKCD, Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal, Order of the Stick, and Go Get a Roomie.

I still don't get why Homestuck is so goddamn popular.

I've heard that it started off interesting and decently written by webcomic standards, but then those 'lolhomosexrape' types of fans flocked to it in droves and dragged everything down into the mud, hence the main reason I don't bother to read it; the fan-base.

With comics they come in actual comics or webcomics, with actual comics being Tintin, Asterix & Scott Pilgrim along with some shorter stuff like The Trigan Empire and The Grufallo. While in webcomics my favourites being The Dreamer, Gunnerkrigg Court, Nimona, Questionable Content, Namesake and The Perry Bible Fellowship along with the usual xkcd & Penny Arcade.

I just read whatever's in the paper, when I get the paper. For webcomics it's pretty much just Order of the Stick and xkcd.

Elfquest was the one for me. A friend lent me a trade paperback, and I was immediately hooked. It showed me that there was a world beyond G-rated superheroes and newspaper comics. I stuck with the fandom for several years.

Bone (by Jeff Smith) was better overall. Sure, I had some complaints about its tone shifts and the ending... but at least the main story is finished. Bone has a few side stories that vary in quality, but they're all much better than Elfquest: New Blood, or The Rebels / Jink.

Calvin & Hobbes, and I refuse to belabor a point already well made by everyone else here.

Tintin is one of my favorite comic books ever made, though sadly the Canadian made cartoon, while perfect in sticking to the original art style, was a tad boring...

V for Vendetta was decent, though honestly I liked the movie more. V was just...too good at what he did. It wasn't very believable to me, and at time preachy.

I liked the older Garfield, actually, the earlier 80s and 90s strips. I know it's not deep or profound in any way, but I loved it. I stopped reading it years ago.

I loved Scott Pilgrim the comic book. I loved it. I don't know why. It was different, close enough to being realistic in its relationships, and its characters were endearing. It was tongue in cheek, sarcastic and witty, and just the right length.

Webcomics wise, I rather like Drowtales. The amount of work they put into that thing, for free, and with such astonishing quality, is staggering. The art is fantastic. Meanwhile, I enjoy Outsider (though its fanbase and obsession to Rationalwiki and bashing religion when I was there made me stay away), but find its update schedule to be...one of the most poorly one I've ever seen. The author does an incredible job, but it's annoying as anything that he always finds time to do interviews and guest strips, but never his own stuff, which is why I'm there. Maybe that's wrong and maybe it's right, but that's what I feel.

I was raised with Asterix, Boule et Bill, Lucky Luck and Spirou, mostly french comics.

Now I like Hellboy, The Walking Dead and Lanfeust (the three series).

Lanfeust de Troy: you follow the Story of Lanfeust in a world where everyone has a special power (which have limits sometimes like the inability to use it in daytime), Lanfeust can melt iron, but after an incident he discover he can access absolute power by being in contact with the ivory of a being called the Magohamoth. So he goes into a quest to comprehend his ability. meeting in his way a dangerous foe as Tanos who has the same power but also have a strong lust for power. The two then fight for their absolute power.

Lanfeust des Étoiles: here we learn that the world of Troy is an experiment to create the absolute power, so Lanfeust and Tanos are collected by starships and sent to a new quest. this one is much more comedic, with some geeky references, like Hoho Seth the most famous secret agent (whose name is in fact a pun with 007, aka James Bond).

Lanfeust Odyssey: Lanfeust return to Troy after the events of the precedent serie, sixteen years later. Only to find how changed his world is.

The cast that doesn't change much is: Lanfeust, his troll compagnon Hebus (see chewbacka? now bigger), and the obligatory girl Cixi (there is two of them, one in the first two series and the second in the third, they have similar appearances and personnality but not the same powers). There is other characters with them depending of the serie, which are important too but they would be too numerous to name all.

I like many of them, but if the question is which one I like the most, I think I'm going to have to go with Neil Gaiman's "The Sandman". I'm a stereotypical geek like that.
