Manga anyone? [can contain NSFW]

Post by Likhos »

I don't know for you but I know mangas are pretty popular.
But even that doesn't make me a fan of bleach or one piece. To tell the truth I didn't even read them.
Let's say this: tell me what you read and I will read your soul.

note: I live in France, some manga may not be published yet in your countries.

Enma by Dark Kana
Image
basically a girl is sent over time and space to deliver a message to some people.
"hell is too full of people and we can't judge them, stop your slaughters or I rip your bones out of your body." with more or less difference depending of the character.
and believe it or not but she actually does rip you bones out of your body if you disobey, which is actually the case for a majority.
some characters are historical even if not forcibly accurate.
this is a nice manga, but doesn't appeal much to me. I only bought tome 1 out of 8 that have been published.
characters of the first tome: Jack the disemboweler (not sure if the name is accurate, I fucking liked this chapter out of all those I read before even if the end is sad), Onisama Kurobe (historical character?), Kaguya (legendary princess from the moon in japanese culture) and Günther the butcher (I have no clue if it's historical, I assume yes, a nice chapter too, a sad ending in it's own way).

Next one: discovered by the mean of the anime version.
Spice and Wolf.
Image
the story of a travelling merchant who meet a wolf-goddess named Holo who want to return to her birthplace. I don't think I have to explain more.
I liked the anime, I like the manga.
Ps: Holo's fanart sure feature a lot of nudity compared to the fact she appear like that only for a few panel.

Next

Youko x Boku SS also called Secret Service - Maison D'Ayakashi.
Image
The story of a young girl from a rich family who get to a house for VIP as a way to be independent from her family.
She want to be independent, except that there is one variable she did not see coming. A bodyguard (although she refused it her parents asked for one)
I love the characters. The drawing is nice and the story has a very interesting plot which I won't spoil.
This has been adapted into an anime too.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nl22YD9IRNc (this scene contain a bit of spoiler, but is kinda censored compared to the manga version.)
One character I like is Kagero, who appear in the video as the dark blue guy. I can't really explain why.
This story is also mainly about monsters and others creatures, mostly from japanese culture.

Next

Sankarea.
Image
HNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG
Oh god where to begin... This is a story about a nerdy guy (Chihiro Furuya) fan of zombies who want to reanimate his cat and a girl (Rea Sanka) who can't do anything because her father is extremely protective of her.
the girl is so fucking cute, it should be criminal. As for the guy:
http://i36.mangareader.net/sankarea/1/s ... 265381.jpg (ho the irony Chihiro, your dream may come true)
What I said is only the beginning, the father is really, really wierd and creepy the more you see of him.
I won't spoil much by saying the story is about zombies, and Chihiro finally end up reanimating his cat.
As for Rea she dies and return back to life as a zombie. does that mean she becomes a killing machine? hehehehee.
I like Chihiro's catlike appearance for some reason.
while this is a love story this is not a hentai, it's more at the ecchi level.
My favorite manga ever.

Little list of those I can't buy but wish I could:
Frankenfran: When the mad's scientist master creation his a surgeon itself it end with unpredictable results... for you.
Monster Musume No Iru Nichijou: A harem comedy with monstergirls. I don't even think this is gonna be published in a european country.

I may check out Enma. Looks like something I would enjoy ^^
Been meaning to read spice and wolf too. That's going to take a while.

I'm fairly new to manga, but here are a few I liked:
(Click on the image for each if you want more info)
[all except for the last two are currently publishing]

Oyasumi Punpun (Goodnight Punpun)
Image

The main focus of this story is the life of a small boy (or bird thing) named Punpun. It also has about five other side stories (one of them being about a cult)
It started out when he was in grade school, now he's in his 20s-30s in the current chapter.
Happy or lighthearted moments are few and far between. I've actually been moved by this story many times in the eleven volumes that currently exist.
This is a must read unless you don't dig sad narratives. The art is so good!

Keroro Gunsou (Sergeant Frog)
Image

I'm only four chapters into this, but it's fairly straightforward. An alien that looks like a frog is caught by two kids while scouting out earth for invasion.
He ends up being stuck there and living with the children, hilarity ensues.

Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan)
Image

In this manga, humans have just about been wiped off the face of the earth by titans. The only things keeping them safe from these titans are three walls: Maria, Sina, and Rose.
The backstory of the protagonist slowly unfolds as the story goes on, explaining some of his friendships and why he does what he does in general.
Expect literally no happy or funny moment in this, it's purely action and sadness. Lots of fun if you're into gore though.
There is also an anime coming out in April.

Watamote (It's Not My Fault That I'm Not Popular!)
Image

The main character is a creepy shut-in girl named Tomoko. An impossibly awkward individual on all levels.
Hopefully you caught on already, but this a straight up comedy. The chapters are somewhat short, but each should manage to get a good laugh out of you.
Just like Shingeki no Kyojin, this manga is getting its own anime.

Ice Revolution
Image

A story about a tomboy-ish girl who wants to stop karate and take up ice skating. It's just a romance, but I liked it anyway!

not simple
Image

All I'm going to tell you about this one is that it's sad (yet again, heh)
And it's only one volume long... Just read it already!

edit: snk and watamote kinda suck at this point

ILY, I didn't realize you had such good taste. I found Not Simple at Barns & Noble a few months ago, read it all there, and loved the hell out of it. It's Not My Fault I'm Not Popular is entertaining, if a bit depressing at times simply due to the fact that the entire series is made up of the fantasy world tormenting the only sympathetic character endlessly. Oyasumi Punpun is also quite good.

Ones that I enjoy, in descending order of enjoyment:

Franken Fran

Maoyuu Maou Yuusha

20th Century Boys

Elfen Lied

Excel Saga (the anime was even better, but it's still pretty good)

There are quite a few others, but they don't leap to mind right now.

I'll get in on this. Although most of my stuff isn't uncommon or unheard of. Oh well. You said you were new to manga, Hagon, so some of this might still be new to you. Although it's probably not.

Ranma 1/2
Image
Probably my favorite manga. Written by Rumiko Takahashi. Most of you have probably at least heard of it. If you haven't, I highly suggest you check it out. It's a very wacky manga about a guy who turns into a girl when splashed with cold water, and then shenanigans.

Maison Ikkuko
Image
Another one by Rumiko Takahashi. It's not quite as childish as Ranma 1/2. It's a great romantic comedy about about a guy in love with his apartment manager. And all of his neighbors are all sociopaths.

Blade of the Immortal
Image
And now for something completely different. This manga is by Hiroaki Samura. It's a really dark manga about an immortal swordsman who helps a girl kill the men who killed her family. If I recall, it was published in the United States by Dark Horse, and won some awards. It has a really cool art style, definitely different from what you normally see in manga.

Hikaru no Go
Image
By Obata, Takeshi and Hotta, Yumi, this is a great manga about a kid who finds a haunted Igo board, and gets possessed by the ghost inside of it. So, logically enough, the kid starts to play Igo. Somehow, this isn't boring and manages to make a great story.

Those are the first four that come to mind, for me at least.

actually I'm not, I kinda grew with Naruto (I still follow the manga but I'm not much of a fan).
I also grew up with the dragonballZ anime (and it'shorrible opening and shitty translations for the attacks).

Thoses are well known it would be useless to present it.
not much a fan of these series for some reason. I do like mechas though.

Recent discovery of mine: the anime Gigi (a magical girl anime from 1984) is still going on french tv.
which is fun sine this anime got the most traumatising ending of season ever for childs.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZSN-MkehOQ (sorry this is a french youtube show but there is nothing else I can get this)
scene at 03:28, have fun.

Gosh, I hardly read anything these days. I can recommend Nana to Kaoru, Genshiken, Blade of the Immortal, Ah! My Goddess, Gunsmith Cats and Tanks! Planning on reading Akira some day. I do mostly agree with Vacuity, though; most series, even those with an interesting premise, tend to not deliver. 90% is bland, boring and unimaginative, but the rest is for the most part very enjoyable.

Motherfucking piece of mother fucking shit. I just finished chapter two, and my mind has been blown. I feel like this is what Kafka would write if he wrote manga. I think I'm going to like this... maybe.

On a different topic, I have to second Brasse. Ah! My Goddess is another manga I very much enjoyed.

Yeah, though I wish the characters were at least a tad more sympathetic. Still, that was fapping for great justice, if such a thing is possible.

God damnit, I miss the forums for a little while and everything happens? Now that is my luck....

Partly on topic:
Personally, I have read so many mangas I made a list of them, wich I may/may not have lost during the reformat of my drive...

On topic:
My personal favorites that I can remember here and now must be Claymore, Death Note and D.Gray-Man (D.Gray is best, the other on shared 2nd)

Bonnouji was a unexpected excellent find. Three volumes were written, and fans are currently translating the last book. I don't expect any company will license it.

Unfortunately, only a few chapters of Hyouge Mono have been translated... and the series is 16 books long and still going. Consider watching its animated adaptation, which has a more complete translation. I seriously doubt that any company will license either the comics or the TV series.

Nodame Cantabile ran for 25 volumes, but the official Del Rey / Kodansha translation only covers the first sixteen. That said, this is a pretty good series about musicians and their relationships. Watching the live action adaptation is also fascinating... it helped me realize that while it's a fairly realistic story, there's also slapstick humor and unrealistic characters.

Sturgeon's Law says that ninety percent of *everything* is crud. And I wholeheartedly agree. It can be applied to any creative medium, style, or format. In other words, it's just as applicable for comics as it is for movies, prose, and games.

You'll never let him live that down, will you? I remember that very conversation.
You all would laugh at the manga I like, or at least read. Lately, anything that I have read, however briefly interesting, has utterly failed to impress me by this point...I post the following just to contribute something to the same old argument.
Why I ever bothered reading Freezing, I'll never know...the ample tits probably had something to do with it, as the execution of the premise made me cringe and skip half the chapters anyway...I've given up by this point.

I actually like Omamori Himari, sort of, and has a...rather unique way of moving along the primary couple's romance (except it's one of the worst "harem balancers" I have ever seen, frankly the main couple would have already cut out the competition if the damn Status Quo wasn't enforced to keep the shippers at bay), and the fights aren't even that bad...but for fanservice, but that's a perk in a different way. It's more of a comedy thing than drama, though it has it's fair share of dramatic developments to try to break up the harem fights. It also has a very nice catgirl, and I like me my catgirls.
Except that the damn thing doesn't bother updating at the site I like for easily months at a time. Manga's a crapshoot with me, and I'm not terribly into it anyway...(I skim TvTropes for ideas as to what to read, so if my list is random, it's because I pick and choose with little rhyme or reason)

Thus, I don't really read Manga in a way that could be called "as a connoisseur", or search for deep, meaningful manga. I do that with films.
