What software are the devs using?

Talk about whatever you want as long as it's (even vaguely) related to MS.

What software are the devs using?

Post by Klokinator »

I really liked the way Katawa Shoujo ran, the way you had multiple characters onscreen, the colored dialogue per character, things of that sort. So I was curious what VN software you guys were planning to use? Same as Katawa, something else, something entirely custom made?

Darn good question. I'm curious about that too. KS did a fine job. I think Missing Stars will too, but it'd be nice to know.

We are using a software engine called Ren'Py. It's fairly easy to use, especially since it runs off of Python. It's free and available on all operating systems!

As for the others:
Art - Photoshop, SAI, anything else the artists wish to use
Writing - Robotic Monkeys Humans
Music - I can't recall off the top of my head.

vis a vis KS was also a ren'py game, but Delta did some tinkering with the engine and stuff to make it custom.
TL;DR anything that was done in KS can be done in MS.

I can only speak for myself, but:

-Sony Acid (my main production suite)
-Native Instruments Kontakt 5 (for sampling)

The rest is hardware ;)

Okay great, now I'm really looking forward to it. I tried the Clannad VN, which I heard a lot of good things about, but the interface and the dialogue was not nearly as easy on the eyes as Katawa.

Oh, yeah! I read their developer's thread about that! Trust me, a coding-freak I most certainly am NOT, but if your using the same general engine...godspeed, guys! Though doubtless you've already got enough people behind this already, if ever you need a tester (hint, hint. ;) ) I'm ready if you need an expendable guy with a good system that has plenty of time on his hands.

*coughs awkwardly* uh, so yeah, thanks for the really prompt answer! :D

Sooo, I finally got a new Laptop, so better late than never:
As a composer, I use a Macbook with Logic Pro 9 and the Logic Studio Suite for sampling and sequencing, a CME VX5 for MIDI support and D/A transforming and a Yamaha PSR 740 as an additional hardware sampler.

Woo-HOO for hardware specifications whose import I can niether understand nor even read!

Thanks, Astartus, your stuff sounds scarily complex enough to impress me!

xD It's really not that complex. My Macbook has Logic Pro as a mixing software. CME VX5 is mainly a keyboard that also includes a MIDI interface and a D/A transformer (that is, you put analog signal in, digital USB signal comes out) and a small fader row; my Yamaha is a normal stage keyboard that I rigged up to the recording setup because the sounds in it are really really good. Sorry for techspeak, sometimes I forget not everyone understands my techmech mojo x3

And you even take the time to patiently explain it to me!!! :D Thanks, Astartus, seriously. Nice of you to do. I THINK I understand. My knowledge of computers and the modern use thereof is...a tad narrow. And shallow. I know some smattering of stuff, but any specifics...yeah...I'm good at OPERATING computers, NOT programming or making anything with them.

But I DO understand the logic of your reply, and the general gist of it. So you literally hook up an electronic keyboard for sound recording? Cool...

Don't worry about techspeak, my friend, my dad is a SERIOUS AI Programmer. I mean, making LEARNING computers. They learn. They really do. It's SCARY. Mostly for analyzing financial markets, stocks, logistics of companies, etc. So I'm PRETTY used to serious Techno-Can, as I call it. Oh, and if ANYONE knows what pen-and-paper RPG "Techno-can" as a language comes from, give yourselves a cookie.

A direct USB conversion...so simple, so obvious, that it NEVER occured to me. Man, I NEED to get schooled.

I am using quite a few applications.

AutoCAD 2012
AutoCAD Architecture 2012
Autodesk Revit Architecture 2012
3D Studio MAX Design 2012
Google Sketchup 8 w/ Twilight Renderer
Adobe Photoshop CS5 (soon to be CS6 when I can get to it)

And other small programs here and there handling textures, light calculations, etc.

OOoooh! More impressive sounding stuff I've NEVER worked with! But it DOES look serious...wait...AutoCAD...I've heard of that...damn...

Are you using the 3d programs to make the perspectives poifect?

That and generate crisp lineart and textures.

Not bad (even though I don't really like Apple :)). That PSR is quite a bit worn by the tooth of time by now, though (to me it sounded very dated even when it was released...). Here's my beauties:

Image

Kurzweil PC3K8
Yamaha AN1x
SM Pro V-Machine
Korg TR-Rack
Korg NS5R
Washburn EA20SDLK electroacoustic
BeyerDynamic DT-880 Pro headphones

Not in the picture:
PC desktop with Intel Q6600@2.4 GHz, 4 GB DDR2 RAM, gigabytes of samples (Komplete 8 installed with about 700 GB of libraries), and a lot of other softsynths.
Toshiba laptop with Intel i5@2.67 GHz, 8 GB DDR3 RAM.I'm not taxing it with sample libraries though (but softsynths, hell yes).
TC Electronic Impact Twin audio interface
Using REAPER 4 as my DAW of choice

...and no time to utilize all that (college, Kontakt scripting for cash, etc. >_<) Gotta keep working hard to get a whole new desktop, i7-3930K, Gigabyte motherboard, 24 GB DDR3, terabytes of HD space, etc... A long time coming!

P.S.: I'm not in the dev team so sorry for intruding ^^'
