Missing Stars Concept Art Thread

Talk about whatever you want as long as it's (even vaguely) related to MS.

Waytfm, I fixed the first post for you. The new tag you want to use is the 'hide'.

because it all depends on the artist(s) of respective character.

Waytfm wrote:Well, I don't think it's quite that bad. For the most part, pageview count and favorites do a fairly good job of singling out very good artists, although it's not perfect.

I can't really fault someone for wanting to get paid either. When they're putting in 7 hours for a drawing for someone else, I can understand wanting to get paid. This is magnified for work on a VN. It's a shit-ton of work for no pay, and I don't expect huge lines to form to get in on that. And when the person asking (me) has nothing on his dA page and isn't known anywhere, it becomes a shit-ton of work for no pay, without any promise of quality or even completion.

Working on a OELVN is, more than anything, a labor of love. It's not something you can expect everyone to be interested in at all, let alone enough dedicate obscene amounts of time to.
As an artist, I just want to thank you for pointing this out. There are a huge number of people out there with big ideas, but far fewer who seem willing to see them to completion. And of those, the ones who have ideas that are worth seeing through to completion...?

So long as I'll be working for free, I have plenty of ideas of my own I could work on, that I feel pretty passionate about. Why would I want to work on someone else's idea, which I'm not as emotionally invested in? That can be a recipe for failure.

The reason "For the exposure/for your portfolio" is usually an illusion, a way people try to convince artists to work for them without meaningful compensation. And a lot of these people seem to think that making artwork isn't a "real" job, so of course they can just do it in their spare time, or at best, accept a pittance in return ("you'll get your name in the credits! And a free copy of the final product!"). And unfortunately, a not inconsiderable portion of society seems to reinforce this notion, so many artists undervalue their own work.

...Sorry, I'm ranting. Thanks for saying this, is what I'm saying. :)

A rant is fine too. The whole "you'll get your name in the credits" has always astounded me. I would laugh in someone's face if they ever tried to offer that as any sort of compensation (Not that anyone would, I'm a writer.). This is one of the best posts I've seen on the subject. Ironically enough, it was shown to me by someone decrying a Con Amore recruition thread on deviantart. I don't think it's an exact analogy to projects like Con Amore and Missing Stars though.

Projects like Con Amore and Missing Stars are done solely because you want to work on them. There's quite literally nothing in it for you, other than your own satisfaction. I've always tried to stress that when asking people to join. And somehow, that's worked out for Con Amore. Not quickly, and not easily, but we've put together a team that I'm proud of, somehow. I'm sure the MS devs understand what I'm talking about as well.

Like I said, it's a labor of love, and the people making the project have absolutely nothing to offer prospective developers. That's something that quite a few VN devs have yet to learn, unfortunately.

For me, as lame as it sounds, getting the opportunity to work on a project like this is its own reward. Not just for the enjoyment, but for the experience that comes with it. Who knows - maybe it could become a springboard for a career. We all have to start somewhere, and there far humbler places to start.
Anyways, on topic please ^^
