High-Functioning Autism isn't as clear cut as books and movies make it out to be. It can be a mishmash of varying social awkwardnesses, from not knowing how to hold a conversation to being completely obnoxious in one, or both. You can be granted with a better than average intelligence, but express it in completely alien ways.

For me, my life has been a roller coaster of ups and downs thanks to AS. Having learned to read at age 2 and having a 4th grade vocabulary at age 6, my parents knew I would be a gifted child. Well, they were sort of right. While I was indeed gifted, I was brought down by my general inability to properly behave in school, as well as my lack of any friends. My elementary and middle school years were not the best, looking back at things. Despite all of that, I've turned our pretty well. Therapy and support were probably my two biggest pillars in keeping me standing tall.

Code: Select all

A quick rundown of my various quirks:

Negatives:
-Shut down when exposed to loud noises (sudden or prolonged)
-Unable to look at people's eyes directly
-Unable to handle hot objects
-Refuse to eat cereal with milk (texture irregularity - food textures or flavors do not match well in my mouth)
-Refuse to eat pancakes with syrup (texture irregularity)
-Risk of overstimulation in large social environments (parties, urban areas, new locations)
-Gets frustrated over small issues, perfectionist in nature
-Tends to take things (figures of speech, idioms, sarcasm) said literally.
-Prone to self-isolation

Positives:
-Reading rate clocked at about 1000 WPM, 85% comprehension
-Near photographic memory
-Impeccable knowledge of trivia
-Able to refine skills as much as I want. Applies to several of my Negatives.
Interesting, I suffer from just about everything you listed here, aside from noticing texture irregularities to that degree. But everything else is spot on.
I was never tested for anything in my life, my parents just wrote me off as an odd child. I've always felt that I am a bit off from everyone else though, I've just never cared enough to get checked. I suppose a visit to a doctor would prove interesting though, might do it someday. I've also been told that when I do talk to anyone, I'm incredibly flighty, as in I tend to change subjects suddenly and often when in a conversation with someone, to the point where I lose most people completely and have to start over. Also prone to long periods of depression and long obsessions with whatever catches my interest. (Which can also lead into said periods of depression, depending on what constantly occupies my thoughts.) I'm sure I have a few things "wrong" somewhere along the line, even my mother suffers from some really bad social anxiety issues. Though it seems like just about everybody does these days, which is sad.

An interesting thread though! Just came upon this game from a link on the Katawa Shoujo forum. I'll definitely be following this one closely! :D
One thing that I'll mention is that I have cardiophobia, literally meaning fear of the heart. If I'm aware of my own heartbeat, I get anxious and have to find something to turn my attention to. And God help me if I feel any strange sensation in my chest. Also means I am terrified of heart attacks. Just thinking about them can make me panic.

The cardiophobia thing is interesting, albeit terrifying. I can't even imagine how that must be.

It's... interesting. Of course, the hard part is once an anxiety attack comes on, heart rate automatically rises. That's the worst, but I've learned to control it for the most part. I can pretty much control my heart rate to a science now, just after years of having those anxiety attacks.

Yeah, that sounds pants-shittingly terrifying. You have my respect for being able to deal with it.

Not bad to be able to play through KS as it is a very central theme in some paths.

Haha, well strangely enough I think it's actually one of the things that kept me playing. I certainly... felt... for Hisao. (I've only played Hanako's path so far... am I in for some even worse heart-related stuff??) I couldn't even imagine how I'd react if I had that condition. The thought gives me chills.
I think it only bothers me in real life. I've never had a panic attack from seeing it in a game or movie. The part where the pilot dies in the beginning of the novel Hatchet messed me up when I was in school. But besides that it seems that it only bothers me if I get the idea that I might have heart problems. I have to calm myself down whenever I get this weird feeling in my chest for example. (kinda feels like my heart skips a beat, usually startles me, for obvious reasons. Though I've gotten those here and there for as long as I can remember and I've been fine, think it's just gas.. NO ONE TELL ME OTHERWISE. :x )

Dude, it's always gas. Every time.

Also, with regards to KS, Hisao's heart condition never really plays a gigantic role in any of the paths. It kinda plays a large role in Lilly's path, but it's still not a consistent theme throughout.

To list what I can think of...
ADHD, apathy, little bit of OCD, some weird form of insomnia that makes me nocturnal, social anxiety (not Hanako bad but I have problems talking to people I don't know), some depression, lacking social skills (and skills in general), paranoia, talk to myself frequently, and probably something else. Or maybe I'm just over-exaggerating but I definitely feel like a giant piece of useless shit 99% of the time. I can't even motivate myself to try to get my life straightened. I just kinda sat there and watched the world go by. Hey at least I'm not suicidal or overweight.
don't really know what to put here yet

Never really thought about it really, people say I have autistic traits and stuff but I've never really but real thought into it, and does talking to yourself a lot and crippling social awkwardness count?

I got rather mild Asperger's Syndrome. Mostly, i got some issues with communication, both with actual speech itself and speaking with others, particurlarly with
somewhat large groups or public presentations such as speaking in the front of the class for group assignments, but sometimes with one-on-one conversations
with very close people. Still have large issues with body language and social cues and also problems with motor skills. Still, after five years of psychological treatment and phonoaudiological sessions as well, i am much better right now.

When I was a few years younger I was admitted to a mental hospital. I honestly can't tell you why at this point because I don't remember at all.

And depression, lots of depression. Not really anymore, though.

I am diagnosed and am being medicated for major depressive episodes. Unipolar depression or major depression are the current diagnoses but bipolar II is on the table as well. I can go into some awesome self-destructive frenzies where reality ceases to be important to preserve. Other times I am fine.

I have a few phobias here and there that have been properly diagnosed (and personally confirmed by my Psychological knowledge), like agoraphobia. I also had autism as a child. Nothing really all that bad though...

Aspergers
It's interesting how being on the spectrum varies from person to person so I'm going to list my symptoms.
I lose my ability to speak when barometric pressure is low.
Certain sounds cause me squeal.
Social adapting is incredibly hard for me.
I think much faster than most people.

There are probably others that aren't coming off the top of my head right now, but this should give an idea of what I usually deal with.
As I mentioned in the "introduce yourself" thread. I attended a school for the mentally disabled for 3 years.
Now I'm a Junior in Highschool the SSD teachers get me to help other students with Aspergers. I won't say I terribly enjoy it, but I volunteer because I don't want them to have to rough it alone like I had to.
