Missing Stars Mental Disorders Speculation

Post by brainy_kevin »

Alright, as the day of the release of the demo draws (theoretically) closer and closer, I thought it would be good to collect the information we have about the heroines (and Erik's) mental disorders and share our speculations about what they might be. At any rate, we can all list our predictions, and whoever ends up being closest can win mad props.

1. The Sources of our Knowledge: Mainly, the two sets of 6 blog posts about the girls. Other sources of knowledge, ranging in quality from tenuous to absurdly tenuous, include conversations with devs on the IRC, fanfics written by devs, info from the original thread on the KS forums, and any info you can Sherlock Holmes out of the Art Gallery or released music. Feel free to suggest any additions to my sources of knowledge.

2. My predictions: Alright, here we go.
Erik-Panic disorder
Katja- Depression
Jeanne- Something Obsessive: OCD, Tic, or Tourette's
Isolda- Aspergers
Lena- General Anxiety Disorder
The Twins- Bipolar Disorder. If they have different disorders, maybe abandonment disorder.
Annaliese- Schizophrenia

3. In defense of my ideas:
Erik-I suspect that it would be something that wouldn't be overly difficult to write. Depression or Aspergers, for example, would be difficult to write because it affects the POV so fundamentally. This would be more 'writeable'. Otherwise, this is just absolutely a guess.
Katja- The original thread on KS had her as the suicidal character. If she practiced self-mutilation, that would explain her bandages. Plus, her current writer's name is Gloom.
Jeanne-In her more recent blog post, the paper in back mentioned "habit rev" which is probably in context 'habit reversal training'. Wikipedia gives the 5 components of this, 2 of which are mentioned in the blog post, awareness and relaxation training. This is used for compulsive disorders.
Isolda- Her more recent blog post had her mention she doesn't really understand what other people mean by romance. The page of literature homework in the background was things that would be difficult for someone on the spectrum eg "What does this person mean? Do you agree with?" etc.
Lena- Kosher said in the IRC that her disorder starts with the letter 'G' and hinted that it was a 'general' disorder. Other than that, I've got no real justification for this.
The Twins-I feel like someone has to have it. Also, they ran away and hurt themselves according to their blog post, that's at least somewhat justified by that.
Annaliese- Again, someone probably has this. According to the KS thread, the MC was supposed to have this, but I doubt that this is true anymore, because it would be difficult to write and some devs on the IRC have hinted that this isn't true anymore.

I think I'm at least on to something with Isolda, Jeanne, and Katja. The rest are all just stabs in the dark. So, share comments, criticisms, and above all, your own predictions!

I don't recall saying anything about Lena having a "general" disorder, but then again, I do say a lot of things that I quickly forget. However, yes, I have stated that she is afflicted with something that starts with a "G" and that although it might be obscure, someone reasonably familiar with the etymology of medical terms would be able to figure it out.

Not really such a good point, I just realized her original writer's name was Merri. So actually on average those two names cancel out.

There's only 4 disorders what begin with "G":
Ganser syndrome (due to a mental disorder)
Generalized anxiety disorder
General adaptation syndrome
Grandiose delusions

That certainly narrows it down

Grandiose delusion.
Hell if you consider the fact she loves Twilight and wears a mask to prevent bites she could be a chuuni believing to be a werewolf that would not even surprise me.

*suddenly the thought of chuuni Lena seems so moe to me*

Unfortunately I'm not sure that the girl who took it would give it back.

The whole school and all the girls are just creations of Erik's paranoid and schizophrenic mind.
