Christmas gift ideas

Post by jarek56 »

Hey, guys and gals...this is actually a pretty serious question. My little sister LOVES the animated movies of Studio Ghibli, and the anime series Mushi-Shi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mushishi . Now, my question. Does anyone know of any anime series or movies that have a similar style to these, in your opinion, that MIGHT be legally available for purchase or aquisition in the US of A? A link to torrent sites or online-viewers wouldn't really be acceptable, due to security concerns for family computers and networks.

I know this is a REALLY weird question, but I would be unbelievably grateful for any help on this. What other anime series remind you of these productions, if you even know of them?

Thanks everyone. I'm just a random lurker of this site, but I felt that everyone here could be...relied on for this. If you don't have any ideas, it's okay. I'll find something. :P

I can't think of any quite like those right off. Has she seen all of the Studio Ghibli films? If not, one that she hasn't sounds like the ideal gift. :)

Why, thank you, ILY. That would be cool...but I have NO idea of how to find that out covertly. Still, a good idea. She's a HUGE fan of Harry Potter (and more importantly, ALAN RICKMANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN / Severus Snape), so the plan was to buy her a T-shirt of Professor Snape and something she could watch/play/enjoy. She's 18, so I have to be a little more creative. She is also smarter than I am, and very good at guessing motives and hidden emotions. Shopping for her involves avoiding any contact with her whatsoever.

Maybe you could get a parent to ask her about those movies. She wouldn't smell anything fishy then, right?

I believe there's a live action feature version of Mushishi, if she hasn't seen that. In terms of anime films similar to Ghibli... idk so much in terms of fantastical plot, but Summer Wars is a stylistically slightly similar and very enjoyable film imo. If she likes beautiful animation, I would also recommend 5 Centimeters Per Second. Just random ideas off the top of my head ^^

I'd recommend "Grave of The Fireflies" ?

I went with 5 Centimeters Per Second. I wanted it to be something she'd NEVER encountered before, and I found lots of good reviews of it. TvTropes, my GO TO people for spoiling something ahead of time, was quite positive in its portrayal of it. I understand that TvTropes isn't a review service, but it's a useful tool for telling whether or not I'll throw something out the door in disgust. Plus, it looked good, and not...like the usual level of anime. You know...

Now, make no mistake, I have a HUGE catgirl fetish appreciate a decent piece of fanservice as much as the next guy, but...my 18 year old sister likes anime with deep, emotional meaning that transcends cultural boundaries without necessarily doing away with them. Thus, Studio Ghibli and Mushi-shi, which are relaxing, universally-acceptable sources of emotion and story. She LOVES rich, masterfully crafted animation, thus, while the fucking sexy attractive cat girl would please me, she would...throw it out for the cheap trash that she thinks it is.

Good choice imo

And there's nothing wrong with gorgeous catgirls. Oftentimes I thank my lucky (missing, even?) stars that we live in a world where scantily clad 2D catgirls and beautifully animated films can co-exist in peace and harmony. A Christmas miracle indeed ^^ Hope she likes it!

To everyone who helped me with this, I wish to make it official. My little sister LOVED the movie, and she hasn't even watched it yet.

Thank you, boys and girls, for all the prompt and helpful help you gave me. Merry Christmas, to all of you, and God Bless you, regardless of your beliefs or styles thereof. Thank you, so much, for everything. I simply wish that, from here on out, that I can provide at least a fraction of the help you gave me.

Thank you so much, and Happy Holidays. I knew I could count on you.

Sincerely,

jarek56
