Artists you like

Post by ILY »

Musicians, painters, mangakas, etc...
Sharing things like this is usually fun/interesting with just two or three people, so I figured it would be moreso en masse. Now help me help you to help us all expand our music libraries and picture folders!
I know we all have wonderful opinions, but I would appreciate it if bitching about anyone's "lack of taste" was kept to a minimum. tia

I found this artist (Kurosaki) recently and love his traditional drawings. They're absolutely gorgeous

Here are some examples of his work:

I'm not good at describing music, so you'll have to take these links and hope for the best, heh.

I found a dude on Youtube called Waterflame that makes good techno music, and who has been hired by bundles of people to do music for flash games. Hell, he even did the music for Castle Crashers!

I like this stuff. Very chill. Reminds me of Afterglow by Phaeleh, vocals by Soundmouse.

Most musicians I could list are already pretty well known - I don't tend to be the guy who finds interesting new stuff, but if you have any interest in melodic instrumental progressive metal I can point you towards fledgling, local friend-of-a-friend band, Eschar:
Arcturus <--- (after 6:00 = manic spine tingling. Listen loud.)
Elements
They have a huge, epic sound and explore a variety of interesting rhythms and time signatures throughout their 5-track EP, Elements, which is up for pay-what-you-want download on their bandcamp

If you're more of an electronic music fan I've got you covered too. Galactaron is a fictional/conceptual 5-piece alien band (irl artist/animator/musician Owen Dennis), sometimes also featuring human Emily Wong on vocals. Their self-titled debut album is available for purchase, and a number of their other tracks and remixes are available for free download. Here are a few tracks:
First Contact
Birds Are Singing But My Lover Won't Return (Transmission from Galactaron (remix)
The Synthesizer
Tyrian Asteroid Dance (cover)
<alabaster> I don't like it that big.

His non-techno music is great too Thanks for the recommendation!

I'm not really a fan of that genre, but the two you posted were fairly enjoyable. I'll have to try some more of their music.

Now this is flippin' awesome. Definitely going to be buying that album. :D

Mangaka:
Tohru Fujisawa

Music:
Ben Gibbard, Mike Kinsella, Chaz Bundick and Conor Oberst are phenomenal at what they do.
Also Kendrick Lamar, TOE, Tyler the Creator and Frank Ocean

Art:
The dudes in Medical Whiskey are pretty awesome, especially EU03.

I'm also a fan of Emmy Cicierega's work.

As far as visual artists go, I've appreciated the works of stylistic avtars from Pollack to Junko Mizuno. I hate having to compile lists...

Music
------------------------------
Bit of eclectic taste when it comes to music, so here's who I've been listening to recently, and a link to my current favorite song of theirs:

Queens of the Stone Age - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgVfjXA_QY0

Them Crooked Vultures - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UkRGuKdQ0I

Primus - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Va1x8cJt9U

The Raconteurs - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXgM3Dd3qIM

Chopin - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPvS0g2papI

Arvo Pärt - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8qg_0P9L6c

Film (Directors)
----------------------------------------

Quentin Tarantino

Martin Scorsese

Hayao Miyazaki

Authors
----------------------------------------

Ray Bradbury

Cormac McCarthy

George Orwell (oldie but a goodie)

"Art" Art (painters and such, & movement with which they are often associated with)

Piet Mondrian (De Stijl)

Eh, I suppose I may as well just suck it up and make a list, utilizing TJ's format.
Keep in mind, I'm not putting these in any particular order beside medium.

Music
------------------------------------------------------------------
Big Black (and all other Steve Albini projects, really) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuO3wwLuF0w

The Red Army Choir - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Q-OzsOmi00 (Sweet Jesus yes)

Erik Satie (my favorite classical composer) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7DBoiyBoJ8

Tool - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhjG47gtMCo

Pink Floyd - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXdNnw99-Ic

Rush - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnC88xBPkkc

VNV Nation - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=caHPYRN0hWc

Simon & Garfunkel - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYKJuDxYr3I

Films (titles only--I don't follow directors for their own sake)
I realize I'm kind of disobeying the premise of this thread by talking about specific pieces of art, rather than artist themselves, but I'd really rather not have to look up the people involved in each of these movies.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Children of Men

Let the Right One In (the original was better, but not by enough of a margin that I'm justified in whining about the American version)

Monty Python: the Search for the Holy Grail

Monty Python: Life of Brain

Donnie Darko

Dr. Strangelove

Pretty Village, Pretty Flame

God Bless America

Trainspotting (better than the book, if only for how much more coherent it is)

Authors
------------------------------------------------------------------
Albert Camus

Franz Kafka

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

Kurt Vonnegut (though I hate most of the fans of his I meet)

Phillip K. Dick

Hunter S. Thompson (his work is done a serious disservice by the shitty attempts to adapt them into movies)

Haruki Murakami

George Orwell (Down and Out in Paris and London > Animal Farm)

Irvine Welsh

Arkady & Boris Strugatsky

Visual artists
------------------------------------------------------------------
Georges Braque

Robert Rauschenberg
